Cakes

I made a few more cakes this week for Halloween. I knew we would be heading to Chattanooga this weekend for a little UTC get together and had seen some really cute cake ideas using the Sports Ball Pan that I just purchased from Michael's.

Here are my creations -

Friday Funnies: Why Dogs Hate Halloween

Tailgate Day

Today is tailgate day in the Pharmacy Week celebration and I made another cake!
I searched online yesterday for some great football cake ideas and found some really really neat ones. I can't take 100% credit for the creative concept, but there are a few additions of our own. I say our because Brent was a huge help in coming up with neat ideas - he always is!

So here's my cake for today ...

My awesome husband made the amazing field goal and wants everyone to know that it's not REALLY supposed to be in end zone. He told me today that if anyone asks why it's there to tell them that it used to be in the end zone a LONG time ago. I told him I work with mostly women who probably could care less....

International Cake ??

This week at work we're celebrating "Pharmacy Week" which is a part of a national celebration of Pharmacists month. It's kind of like Homecoming week in High School where every day you have a different theme and you're supposed to dress up and participate in themed activities. Monday was pajama day (you're all probably thinking like me: who wants to see their co-workers in their pajamas?! that image can NEVER go away!) Wednesday is "tailgate" day, Thursday tropical day and Friday the infamous "70's and 80's day."

There's always a "reject" day - the day that's secretly set aside as the "off day." Think about it: Riverbend does it - it's called the Bessie Smith Strut. Everyone knows it. Every festival/celebration has an off day - Pharmacy Week's just happens to be today: International Day. Yep. International. Tell me what YOU think would be international in Nashville, TN??! Seriously, though. We were supposed to bring food and make our own flags??? I guess we're to create our own "Pharmacy" country?? But seriously I do have a good friend/co-worker who is Puerto Rican and is making fried plantans. I am personally excited about those!

So last night was cake class. I had to make one of 4 cakes from our Wilton book. If you've ever taken the classes, the cake choices are always pretty frilly and girly and probably not appropriate for Pharmacy Week, much less International Day. So my food of choice today might be a bit of a stretch, but hey! At least I brought something which in the world of "bring something for food" means I get to partake in everyone else's creations.

Here's my final cake of my cake classes. That's right: I'm completely finished with all 4 courses totaling 16 weeks in all. This last course was fondant and gum paste which is what the cake is decorated with.

It's VERY springy given my previous post of my love for fall. I guess I could have adapted the design like a girl in my class - she make the daisies in black and the base in orange so it looked like a big spider web. It was actually pretty cool.

Hope you have a Terrific Tuesday!!

Music and Molasses

Brent and I have been craving a good fall festival. Those of you who attend good festivals this time of year, know what I'm talking about. I needed a great selection of crafts, homemade foods that are over priced, cloggers, singers, farm animals, pumpkins - all the goodness that makes up a good fall festival. Brent and I both were a little sad when we realized we wouldn't be attending the infamous Prater's and Ketner's Mill festivals with the Whitakers as we have for the past 9 years now that we live in Nashville. We knew we had to find festivals of our own.
Last weekend I was doing a little online searching for a festival in our area and discovered a great festival that was literally right across the street from our apartment at the TN Agricultural Museum. This was a great festival and the weather was fantastic yesterday! This was a really neat festival - it showcased a variety of agricultural history including demonstrations and equipment that was used.
Here are a few pictures from the day...

This guy was making brooms - the good brooms that you can't buy in the stores anymore. Brent was surprised at the end product - he thought they were going to be like the "witch" brooms that were for decoration only.
The TN Wildlife Rescue group had a booth showing the various animals they had rescued because they had been injured. And no, that's not a bear's arm - that's Brent holding the eagle...
My husband LOVES country and bluegrass music, in case you weren't aware. He would have stayed at the festival for hours as long as the different bands were playing. You can see here in this picture he looks as happy as a kid in a candy store...

This guy was making chairs.

We didn't get the memo that we were supposed to dress up like Paul Revere...

This was an AWESOME demonstration showing a collie dog hearing sheep. It was really amazing how quickly the dog got the herd back up the hill. These pictures don't do it justice, but it was really neat!

My only disappointment was that we never found the molasses in the "music and molasses" festival. I was looking forward to it for our ginger snaps this Christmas. Ironic, huh?

Needless to say, we had a great time. We missed having all the Whitakers here to experience it with us, but we're hoping we can remember it for next year and make it a tradition.

The weather is FABULOUS and I hope everyone has had the opportunity to enjoy it.

Have a great week and happy fall ya'll !! (love that saying, we just need a bale of hay to paint it on..ha!)

Friday Funnies

Looking back on the past 5 months

It's crazy but true: it's been 5 months since we changed our address to Nashville, TN. I was just thinking about all the memories we've made in such a short amount of time...
Titans Games, Kenny Chesney concert (Poets and Pirates concert), Hootie and the Blowfish concert, playing softball with Kairos (and meeting new people), having great friends from TVFCU visit for a weekend...it's all been fabulous! I never imagined that all our family would come to spend the night with us at some point, but they have! For the first time I get to see my cousin on a weekly basis at least, sometimes more! Who knew I would move here and end up having surgery so quickly, but thankfully we're on the tail end of the recovery of that. Oh and my cake classes - it just took moving away to work on such a fun craft/hobby and hopefully a business opportunity down the road.

Even more exciting are all the opportunities that Brent has experienced as a result of stand up comedy. I was so proud of him that first night he did open mic night at Spanky's and since that night several months ago, he has developed into an amazing speaker and comedian. He's also made some great connections and we're hoping it opens up some great doors for him as he moves towards becoming a motivational speaker.

We've also met a few great people as a result of Brent's job. Recently we went to Austin and Ann's house to watch the debate and hang out. We had a great time and it was really nice to get to establish new friendships in Nashvegas. Brent says we're officially OLD because we planned a Friday night around the presidential debate.

We've been pretty bummed, though, that we haven't seen anyone famous! We know they live ALL around us, and we hear about them on the news ALL THE TIME but still, no famous people sightings. Brent always thinks he sees Dave Ramsey, but they're all just posers.

Last night we had our first encounter with a famous person! Thanks to our friends, Chad and Gena, who rolled into town and invited us for dinner at their friends house - Phil and Kendra Stacey. We had met Phil at Gena's wedding last October as he was a fellow bridal party member with me. However, going to their home was a whole different deal! These guys were so down to earth and we had a blast. Kendra and Phil met their freshman year at Lee University in Cleveland. Along with Chad and Gena, Brent is a Lee "flame" so they all had something in common. I always joke that I wasn't "sanctified" enough to go to Lee...a little COG humor for all you baptists that don't get it... HA
Anyway, we had SUCH a great time. The Staceys invited us back to their house in November as they are starting a small group for young couples. In case you don't realize that we live in SUCH a small world - one of the guys in the small group went to Lee Univ with Brent and in fact they were great friends, even traveling to South America together for their cross-cultural experience. (Or as his grandmother STILL thinks: a "mission" trip)
Anyway, we are pumped to get to meet more couples in a great environment! Brent and I are such social people and I have THOROUGHLY missed entertaining people at our house, that it was so nice to get to hang out with friends, eating, laughing and having a great conversation.

The next 5 months are exciting as we have gotten settled and feel a little more oriented with our new city. We hope to start looking to buy a new house at the first of the year, but we're not in any hurry. Our apartment isn't THAT bad - heck, if I can make it up 30 steps on crutches for 3 weeks, we can stay here a few more months! Who knows what will happen with our jobs, housing, friends, connections, church, but we are open to whatever God has planned for us while we're on our little "Nashville Mission." Thank you to everyone who's come to see us while we have transitioned to our new city: it makes it MUCH easier to get to see those people who know you the best on a regular basis.

Foot, Lunch Dates, Cake, Chattanooga

Hey There Hi There Ho There!

I have a few things to update..

1. My foot is doing great! When we went to the doctor last week, he originally told me I could start putting a little weight on my foot and walk with the help of my crutches. At the end of my appointment, he changed his mind and told me to wait another week. Well my foot has been feeling great so today I took a few VERY light steps with the help of my crutches and it felt WEIRD. The bottom of my foot feels like when your foot is about to fall asleep and there's like thousands of needles going in the bottom. It's strange. I'm sure it's just all the nerves and tendons getting readjusted :) But thanks to everyone whose called or emailed or sent get well wishes. I've gotten some awesome stuff including flowers, scrapbooking supplies, a funny card and most recently: an awesome gift card from my friends at TVFCU!!! woo hoo nothing helps the healing process better than FOOD!
2. If ever I doubted my friendship with Brittany, it was solidified this past week as she had a very PLEASANT surprise for me. Brent called me on Thursday morning and said he was having a rough day and wanted to come pick me up for lunch. I thought it was super nice so I didn't complain, but it was really strange. We're both trying to be conservative with our gas usage and the round trip for him to our apartment is about 45 minutes. BUT I didn't say anything and just went with the flow. I made my way down our steps and waited patiently for him outside. Next thing I know, this little red head pulled up in front of our apartment!! Brittany and Ada surprised me and took me to lunch on Thursday. It was an awesome surprise. We had a great time - we ate at Puffy Muffin Restaurant (it was incredible) and walked around a few cute stores in the area. It was a very short but awesome and sweet visit. We had a great time and she even brought me some get well gifts: scrapbooking supplies, a cooking magazine and my fave candy: sour worms! Unfortunately, I made a fatal mistake and left the worms on the dashboard in the car and when we returned a few hours later, the worms were one huge blob of GOO.

Thanks for the visit Brittany and Ada - it was awesome!!

3. Cake Classes are going really well. We started fondant and gum paste tonight meaning I'll learn to do a little more with fondant. Last week I made 2 different cakes - one for my class that involved THIRTY roses made of fondant. These little suckers are no easy feat with EACH rose requiring a 4 step process. CRAZY!!! The end result is beautiful, I must say.
I also have the wonderful pleasure of making a birthday cake for Maddy - her mom Sharon works with me. I offered to make her cake and even worked together on the design.
It literally took me all day, but it was a great learning experience. Definitely a few things I'll do differently next time, but I think there might be some more orders coming down the pipe because so many co-workers saw my work! YAY

Here are some cake pictures:

Last, but definitely not least - we had a great visit to Chattanooga this past weekend. I took ZERO pictures, but all the memories are in my mind :) ha ha We started the weekend by going to watch my nephew play football on one very hot FALL morning. We ended up spending the entire day at my parents house afterwards playing card games and eventually sitting around a campfire in their backyard making s' mores. It was awesome!

Sunday we spent the day with the Whitakers at Brandi and JJ's and had a great time there as well. The boys are getting so big and have developed some very cute personalities! Brent and I had a great trip - it was probably the least stressful trip we've had to Chattanooga.

Now it's back to the work week carrying on life as usual in awesome Nashville! I hope everyone's getting to spend some time outside with this BEAUTIFUL weather we're having.

Post Op Update: Day 14

So I went back to the doctor today to get the stitches (all seven of them) taken out. And before you ask, YES - it was very painful. This might sound stupid, but I honestly was not expecting it to be so dang painful. There were a few tears shed, let's just put it that way.

One by one he picked those stupid things out of my foot and it was awful. I wouldn't wish it on my worst enemy. All I can say about it is that I was definitely glad when it was over. Brent was right there the whole time watching it all - what a trooper.

Anyway, they put these "paper stitches" on my battle wound and I have another beautiful BLACK stylish boot. I still can't put any weight on my foot - still 100% on crutches - at least for the next week, but the biggest news: I get to take a shower!! WOO HOO *Just to clarify: I've been "bathing" but not full on in the shower because I couldn't get my cast wet for the past 2 weeks.

So I have to go back next week (again) for a little follow-up visit and see when I can start putting weight on the ol' foot.
Here are a few pictures from today...
