Hot Topics and Cake...great combination!

So there's a lot going on in the news right now and while it's definitely not Tuesday I feel like we need some "Hot Topics."
Obama has officially completed his first 100 days. I have heard so many different opinions on if he did a "job well done," his approval rating, etc. But I did watch the first few minutes of his press conference last night. I was impressed that his number one issue was the Swine Flu, or as we're not supposed to refer to it as the H1N1 virus because China will no longer accept shipments of pork from the U.S. (side note: anyone else find that frustrating? if you do any amount of research, you can clearly learn that swine flu is not contracted by eating pork...DUH! and they say the Chinese are smart...geez)
Anyway, back on subject - whether Obama is doing great or not, he did have a very tough situation to step into in his first 100 days in office. He has tackled many issues like gangbusters, but I was extremely disappointed that he discredited all of the TEA parties that have been taking place. He has basically said they are not worth his attention. Seriously?! That's about as bad as Specter changing political parties because he was afraid he wasn't going to get re-elected. That's democracy at its finest....
In other news...anyone been keeping up with the Miss California issue? I was sooo proud of her for answering exactly how she believed not how she wanted others to make her believe. What I really loved was that she did it in such a tactful manner even putting her disclaimer, "not to offend anyone, but this is how I believe..." what a great woman! How sad to think she didn't win the title of Miss America because Perez Hilton had a lame question, setting her up for failure. I thought Miss America was to embody the freedom of speech? I guess not.

The swine flu/H1N1 outbreak has caused quite a rush of excitement and anxiety. Of course I'm pregnant, so everyone has been telling me to be careful. (Thank you everyone for watching out for me - believe me, I stay on top of the subject.) But did you know that more than 35,000 people a YEAR in the United States die from the regular ol' flu? THIRTY FIVE THOUSAND! And we don't hear nearly as much about those cases as we have about the swine flu. Also did you know that this strain of swine flu gets its name because it is a crazy concoction of the regular flu, avian flu and swine flu? If everyone would do a better job of washing their hands after they potty, cover their mouth when they sneeze and use antibacterial ALL the time, we might not be in this situation.
This morning, the first case of swine flu has been reported in TN - right here in Nashville as a matter of fact. The school that the boy attends has been closed, so hopefully it will prevent the spread of the virus. Here's the article if you haven't heard about it. My point in posting it is not to make everyone panic, but just to realize that no matter where you travel, you are susceptible to contracting the virus. Just be smart.
Ok and ending on a lighter note - I made yet another cake for work today! This is a random make up of a "fancy" looking cake and cute, fun birthday cake (thanks again Brittany for the pan!)

More Pics from the Marathon/Half Marathon

Brittany had some more GREAT photos from this past weekend that I wanted to post. Such HIGH quality pics, but also just plain good photos! It definitely puts my little Kodak to shame :) haha

Here are the guys at the start of the Expo.

My favorite shot of all: Brent on Friday night eating Brownie batter. He said it was his Pre-Race meal and trade secret of a good time...

Here's Brittany with Dan and Dane from the Biggest Loser. Yes, she's short, but these guys were HUGE! (tall wise, not width wise)

And Denise Austin signing autographs. Ironically, she's a spokesperson for Smucker's.

We FINALLY got to see Brent - here he is on his last 1/10 of a mile. He LOOKED awesome! I was so proud of him.

And I decided to try to run a little with him at the end. I was so excited to see him and see how good he was doing. No, that's not a barn running beside him, it's me - the wide load....

And here's how Ada felt about the whole awards situation...

Baskin Robbins - 31 cent scoop!

Baskin Robbins is having their annual 31 cent scoop night tonight!!! Check it out...

Country Music Marathon and Half Marathoners

This past weekend was very eventful at the Whitaker household. Our good friends the Moncriefs came in town on Thursday afternoon to kick start what was sure to be a busy, eventful weekend. Brent, Jimmy and Dusty were participating in the Country Music Marathon/Half Marathon in Nashville. We had made plans months in advance for the Cranes and Moncriefs to stay at the house as well as to host a pre-race pasta party the night before. We were so excited to have Katie and Owen, as well as the Garzas join in on the pasta dinner. It was a great UTC gathering at our new home!

Friday we spent the day downtown at the Health and Fitness Expo where there were a plethora of vendors and attractions related to the race. Also the guys had to get registered, get all their gear together and make sure they were fully prepared for the next day.

We saw some pretty neat things at the expo including Denise Austin, the work-out video lady. We also saw Dan and Dane from this season's Biggest Loser.

Friday was rather eventful with the dinner at our house with all of our great friends as well as Brent's aunt, uncle and their three kids from Birmingham. Their oldest daughter, MaryAnne was running the race so they came to support her.

As the night went on, we quickly realized something was terribly wrong with our air conditioner as the house continued to get warmer and warmer. Unfortunately, it would not work which made for a very balmy night's sleep.

Saturday morning came early - 4:15 to be exact as the guys started getting together and left our house around 4:30 to head downtown. It was a rough start to the morning as we had one camper that required a 2am drive around the town and another camper have a bad dream. (which actually we figured out later was really the beginning of an ear infection)

With just a few hours of sleep under their belts, we wished the boys well and they hit the road.

By 5:30 all the girls loaded up and followed suit to downtown. We had quite an eventful morning trying to determine the best spectator spot. We parked at the finish line, rode a "participant shuttle" to the start line and were fortunate enough to at least see Dusty on his way. Jimmy had already started with all the Kenyans and Brent was no where to be found.

We quickly determined we had quite the hike back to the finish line where we originally parked. I am pretty sure we hoofed about 4 miles that morning, babies in tow, with a cool 90+ degree temperature day.

We finally made it to the finish line, searched for Jimmy to no avail, then settled into a spot to watch for Brent. He rounded the corner on the last mile and looked fantastic! I was so proud of him. A few hours later, we all cheered on Dusty as he wrapped up his 5 hour, 26 mile trek.

We finally found Jimmy who had been finished for quite some time, but was walking aimlessly around searching for his "supporters." ha!

It was a great weekend, needless to say. Tackling many milestones: Brent completing his first half marathon (13.1 miles) in less than 3 hours and Dusty completing his first full marathon in less than 5 hours! We were very proud of all of them. (Even Jimmy, who hung with the Kenyans!)

There were RIDICULOUS lines pre-race to all of the port-o-toilets. We had to walk behind this huge long line and MAN did they stink!! I think it was safe to say there were a lot of nervous bellies... YUCK

This is hard to see, but these are some of the racers waiting to get to their spot on the start line. There were 31 corrals with 1,000 runners in each corral. They let them start every 2-3 minutes, so the start took over an hour for every runner to get through.

There's a guy in this pic without his shirt on, which was funny because Brent kept saying he was going to run shirtless because he couldn't find the right attire...

The girls waiting to see our guys.

The line of runners was infinite! I was amazing at how far down the street they were lined up.

Yep, more port-o-toilets...different spot...different line...same funky smell.

The official start line.

I could never find Brent, but I did find his corral number right before they crossed the start line. He's in there some where...

Brent - post-race after he changed out of his shirt. He just looked like a by-stander, all calm and cool. Other runners looked like they were going to die...literally!

All of the finishers:

Brent, Dusty (full) and Jimmy

Cake Numero Tres

This was the final cake I made for the week. A co-worker requested a birthday cake for her sons' birthday party. They are HUGE Gator Fans (bleh) so I tried to incorporate their fanatical behavior into the cake. They were having their party at a rec center, playing dodge ball and basketball so I tied that into the theme of the cake.

Cake Numero Dos

Here's Today's Cake - I made it especially for our wonderful superfantastic Administrative Professionals that work with our department!

Cake Week and Mule Day 5K

This is cake week. Officially. Well at least for me. I have four cakes to make over a period of four days. That might not sound like much, but of course each of them has their own personality and really neat details. This is the first one I made for today for a baby shower after work. I found the idea online so I can't take credit for the concept, but I am still rather pleased with the way it turned out:

While uploading this photo I realized I never blogged about Brent's Mule Day 5K a few weeks ago! Columbia, TN has a Mule Day festival every year and we decided to attend. To get a little more prepared for the upcoming Country Music 1/2 Marathon, Brent decided to run in the 5K. The day before our good friend, Austin decided to join in on the fun as he prepares for a Triathlon in sunny Florida. Surprisingly there was a really large turnout for the race - it probably helped that the temperatures were perfect and the day was beautiful.
Both of the guys did a great job - finishing in less than 40 minutes. Sure, they're not Ironmen, but they could give a "Clydesdale" a run for their money. ha ha
Here are the guys getting ready for the race. Austin broke out the orange pants for good luck...
Brent is the stretch master...
Hands are very important when running. Be sure to get them nice and stretched.

There was quite a large crowd of people running the race. I believe they said 3,000 which is quite a lot considering the size of Columbia.
Austin finished in enough time to pause for a quick camera shot...

Brent's face is priceless in this pic! He looks exhausted, but honestly he wasn't....Pretty funny. The irony of the whole race is that afterwards they had Dunkin' Donuts for all the racers. Nice!

The guys after it's all said and done. They look like champs to me!
We decided to partake in the actual Mule Day festivities, but on our way back we ran into the end of the parade. We pulled over on the side of the road and had front row seats to the parade. We didn't realize there were so many different types of Mules and how big and small they could be.
We don't usually take Fletcher and Fiona to activities like this, but for some reason we decided to. Fletcher DID not like the Mules at all. He constantly barked at them all day long, so yes, we were those people with the annoying yappy dog while everyone was trying to enjoy the day. We actually heard later on the news that one of the mules was spooked and knocked a small child off their mule wagon. Thankfully they were ok, but we definitely learned our lesson about the dogs and large animals.
Here's one of MANY mule wagons...

Friday Funnies!

Crazy Weather

Our Good Friday actually started early around 4:15 a.m. as storms ripped through our neighborhood, waking Brent and I to crazy-sounding wind and side-ways rain. After turning on the TV, we learned that a major storm front was headed our way and it was only minutes later that the tornado sirens went off. It was one of those times when you turn on the weather, you see the radar pictures and know that it's going to be an eventful weather day.
I spent the first half of the day glued to the TV, listening to the forecasts of the storms heading our way, but the most serious came around 1:00 when quarter-size hail starting raining down in our yard, pounding our windows as if it were to break through the glass at any moment. The wind started to pick up and the weather guys started sounding a little more serious about the intensity of the storm. Their exact words, "we will be surprised if this doesn't result in a tornado..."
Minutes later, I watched the news as they showed video of a funnel cloud moving through Columbia (less than 10 minutes from our house). It was at that moment, that they realized a serious tornado would likely touch down in the Murfreesboro area. Moments later, photographs and pictures came through on the TV of the devastation to one neighborhood. Houses were literally picked up off their foundation and slammed into the ground. Cars were thrown around like small toys. One picture I saw of a 2x4 appeared as a missile into the roof of another house.
It was only hours later that the realization came that entire neighborhoods were destroyed - approximately 750 homes total were damaged, with over 100 being completely demolished. Tractor trailers and cars were reportedly turned over on Interstate 24 heading towards to Chattanooga, creating mass havoc as emergency crews worked to access the people trapped inside their houses.
Sadly, two people lost their lives as they tried to leave their house moments before the storm touched down - supposedly they got scared and thought they could escape the storm.

Thankfully we were ok. No damage in our neighborhood and I think the dogs are getting used to the crazy weather! (not to say that WE are) We've spoken to our neighbors and told them that we are NOT used to tornadoes, but they've all assured us that this has been a particularly violent tornado season. We have until the end of May until we're in the clear, so we're just praying for protection and that it settles down a bit. Of course, I say this after hearing reports this morning that we have yet ANOTHER violent system moving through tonight.
And to end on more of a light-hearted note: here's a video posted on the weather channel by a fine Murfreesboro resident. My favorite line is, "Go get in the tuuuuub."

"He Isn't Here"

"1 But very early on Sunday morning* the women went to the tomb, taking the spices they had prepared.2 They found that the stone had been rolled away from the entrance.3 So they went in, but they didn't find the body of the Lord Jesus.4 As they stood there puzzled, two men suddenly appeared to them, clothed in dazzling robes. 5 The women were terrified and bowed with their faces to the ground. Then the men asked, "Why are you looking among the dead for someone who is alive?6 He isn't here! He is risen from the dead!" Luke 24:1-6

I entrust My Spirit Into Your Hands

"By this time it was about noon, and darkness fell across the whole land until three o'clock.45 The light from the sun was gone. And suddenly, the curtain in the sanctuary of the Temple was torn down the middle. Then Jesus shouted, "Father, I entrust my spirit into your hands!"* And with those words he breathed his last." - Luke 23:44-46

Wordless Wednesday

It's a Girl!

I had my first ultrasound on Monday and we found out that we are having a girl! Of course, we are absolutely excited - I had a feeling the entire time that I was having a girl, but of course you just never know until those pictures come in. Ironically, I'm pregnant along with 4 other girls that I work with and all of us are having girls which is crazy!

This isn't a great picture but it's something for everyone to look at and much more interesting that me just announcing that we're having a girl.

We haven't decided for sure on a name, but check back for a name poll - we've got a few ideas and might need our Opp Knockers' help deciding what the name should be.

So here she is: Little Miss W...

Thinking You're Naked

Some days I have a lot to say. Other days I read things that speak to me and I feel will likely speak to so many others.
Today is one of those days. This is from the "Stuff Christians Like" blog which is a fan favorite. Check out today's post....it's really good and totally worth the 2 1/2 minutes it takes to read it.
