As we start off January of 2009 our lives have become tangled again! Why do we do this to ourselves? One of my goals in 2009 is to sit back and enjoy a few days of doing absolutely nothing. I want to hang out with Becca and untangle my life in '09.
Just the other day I started this untangling process by telling someone "NO" to a meeting outside of work in which I had no desire to attend and provided no personal benefit if I did attend. I actually wanted to scream, fall on the floor and pitch a good, two-year old kind of fit. (side note: I thought about doing this for blog purposes only. It would have made for some really funny pictures!)
So instead of agonizing over this painful meeting, I said no and I was done with it. And I must say, it felt really good!
But why must we go through the painful agonizing? Why can't we just say no immediately, without guilt?
I will tell you why: as we grow up and become adults, we build unrealistic expectations for ourselves. We think that we have to go through life and do our best to not let anyone down: our parents, our friends, our spouse, our co workers and especially our boss.
So how we do avoid letting these people down? We say yes. We say yes to anything and everything they ask of us. If we didn't, we think the world would end. But it won't - your world will keep on track, just with less responsibilities and pressure.
As I look at the above picture it makes me want to do two things:
1. go to McKay’s used book store and
2. scratch my scalp with a lawn rake.
Sure, the picture is gross, but for me it paints a metaphoric picture in my head: sometimes our lives can get a little tangled, we leave it alone and eventually it's out of control and there's not much we can do on our own except to cut everything off.
So here's your challenge: De-tangle in 2009!
Tell people NO (with kindness of course!)
My Disclaimer: do not tell your spouse NO! I do not approve of this in any form or fashion.
Once you de-tangle your life, you will find time to do those things that you promised to do in 2009: exercise, budget, go back to school, or just become a better you.
Here's a quote that changed my own personal views of my free time:
"What are you doing at night, to help you get out of your dreaded tomorrow?"

At the moment I cannot think of anything funny to say about this picture. I know there's humor out there to fit this picture, but I am having to do all I can not to throw up. I can't help but wonder how many animals or bugs are living in that mess??
GROSSSSS.
On the bright side, I love that we, the Opp Knocker fans, have an opportunity to hear from Motivation for Life! Thanks for the encouragement. Who could ask for a better brother-in-law?
