Cake Week and Mule Day 5K

This is cake week. Officially. Well at least for me. I have four cakes to make over a period of four days. That might not sound like much, but of course each of them has their own personality and really neat details. This is the first one I made for today for a baby shower after work. I found the idea online so I can't take credit for the concept, but I am still rather pleased with the way it turned out:

While uploading this photo I realized I never blogged about Brent's Mule Day 5K a few weeks ago! Columbia, TN has a Mule Day festival every year and we decided to attend. To get a little more prepared for the upcoming Country Music 1/2 Marathon, Brent decided to run in the 5K. The day before our good friend, Austin decided to join in on the fun as he prepares for a Triathlon in sunny Florida. Surprisingly there was a really large turnout for the race - it probably helped that the temperatures were perfect and the day was beautiful.
Both of the guys did a great job - finishing in less than 40 minutes. Sure, they're not Ironmen, but they could give a "Clydesdale" a run for their money. ha ha
Here are the guys getting ready for the race. Austin broke out the orange pants for good luck...
Brent is the stretch master...
Hands are very important when running. Be sure to get them nice and stretched.

There was quite a large crowd of people running the race. I believe they said 3,000 which is quite a lot considering the size of Columbia.
Austin finished in enough time to pause for a quick camera shot...

Brent's face is priceless in this pic! He looks exhausted, but honestly he wasn't....Pretty funny. The irony of the whole race is that afterwards they had Dunkin' Donuts for all the racers. Nice!

The guys after it's all said and done. They look like champs to me!
We decided to partake in the actual Mule Day festivities, but on our way back we ran into the end of the parade. We pulled over on the side of the road and had front row seats to the parade. We didn't realize there were so many different types of Mules and how big and small they could be.
We don't usually take Fletcher and Fiona to activities like this, but for some reason we decided to. Fletcher DID not like the Mules at all. He constantly barked at them all day long, so yes, we were those people with the annoying yappy dog while everyone was trying to enjoy the day. We actually heard later on the news that one of the mules was spooked and knocked a small child off their mule wagon. Thankfully they were ok, but we definitely learned our lesson about the dogs and large animals.
Here's one of MANY mule wagons...
