He used to buy her collectibles, hide them in their cabinet and just wait to see how long it took her to notice her gift. Even if it meant weeks or months, he wouldn't say anything until she noticed. He bought her a brand new Mercedes one time and I remember as a little girl having my grandmother promise me she'd give it to me one day. (probably why it's my dream car to this day). She is definitely a little bit country and he's well..not quite rock and roll, but definitely "city-fied" as her family would probably say and even after 60 years of marriage, they still have nice things to say to each other and about each other. It's my grandparents and we had the wonderful pleasure of celebrating their marriage this past weekend in Chattanooga.
I have many many fond memories growing up with grandparents who were always involved in my life. My grandmother will always be "Nanny". My grandfather: Grandaddy. They treated Jennifer and I as good as gold. I'm pretty sure we could have gotten away with just about anything if it were up to them.
They have some wonderful stories to share including that their second Christmas together their best gifts were twins: my dad and uncle. They were stationed in Hawaii and a few years ago, I got to see the big pink hospital where they were born.
We had a great time getting our family together to celebrate such a special occasion. Here are just a few pictures from the day - only a small glimpse into an amazing marriage. When asked what the secret was to 60 years of marriage: "Never go to bed angry." It's just that simple folks. They both have so much wisdom to share and Brent and I both enjoy getting to soak that up as much as possible (Brent's definitely better at it than I am)
Here's the ENTIRE group including my mom's brothers and their wives - while they are also Thorntons, it was the other side of the Thorntons celebrating. See if you can figure that one out...haha
